Americanah

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies Americanah examines the way gender, class, and race can intersect in daily experience, and how these intersections complicate ideas of equality and empowerment for women. Put another way, the novel asks readers to avoid perceiving women as a homogeneous group with a uniform experience. The novel instead encourages readers to acknowledge the privileges of certain groups of women, and to recognize that all or some of these privileges are unavailable to other groups. Ifemelu gains perspective into the different ways class and ethnicity affect womanhood because of her particularly varied experiences in America, which she documents in her blog. One might say that while the novel at first appears to be the story of Ifemelus migrations between America and Nigeria, on closer inspection it is a narrative of movement between careers, social classes, relationships, and racial milieus. Carefully consider the effects of her movements when responding to this essay prompt.
Purpose
With the above considerations in mind, your thesis should focus on the following question:
In what ways does the novel lead readers to re-think the relationships between race, class, nationality, and gender? What conclusions might one draw about such relationships in the novel?
You should of course address any portion of the text that will help you formulate a response to this questions. You may also draw from secondary sources to address topics introduced in class and which might inform an analysis of this text, including:
Intersectionality
Immigration
Transnationalism
Feminism
Nigeria (social and political contexts)
Postcolonialism
Narratology
Remember: discussion of these topics should be undertaken as part of a focused discussion of the novel, and your essay will ultimately be unified around whatever arguments relating to the novel you plan to make.
